Only three area teams survive second-round girls soccer
testing
Chapin, Lexington and Swansea are the only Midlands
teams left standing in the state girls soccer playoffs.
Chapin (17-6) advanced to the third round of the Class 3A playoffs with a
3-0 win over Daniel Wednesday at home. Kendall Keele continued her
late-season scoring surge with two goals. Keele, who also had two scores in
Chapin’s first round win on Monday, has scored seven goals during the
Eagles’ current six-match winning streak. Keeper Laya Neal posted her third
straight shutout, her fifth in the last six matches and her 16th of the
season.
Chapin is the only area team with a third round home match on Friday. The
fifth-ranked Eagles host sixth-ranked Eastside with a Final Four spot on the
line. more
Mauldin and Riverside girls advance
Christ Church blanks Walhalla
Mauldin pulled away from a 1-1 halftime deadlock with four unanswered
goals in the second half en route to a 5-1 victory over Ridge View Wednesday
night in the second round of the girls Class AAAA soccer playoffs.
Ali Simpson gave Mauldin a 1-0 lead with a goal from 25 yards out about
15 minutes into the match, but Ridge View tied it up when Mauldin goalie
Morgan Hert dropped a shot and Caroline McCloskey kicked in the loose ball.
“I think that kind of rocked our girls a little bit because Morgan's so
solid back there,” Mauldin coach Kevin Czar said. “Most of the time she
saves the rest of us when we make a mistake. I told the team that we had to
pick it up for her now.”
Mauldin got goals from Gracie Boswell and Sara Schaidle and two goals
from Lauren Young to thwart Ridge View in the second half. And Hert showed

Eight Midlands teams set for 4A playoffs
Dutch Fork’s plan to go unbeaten during the regular season went awry late in
the season, but the 19-2, third-ranked Silver Foxes are still in the running
to achieve the ultimate goal of securing the school first state girls soccer
championship.
The DF postseason quest begins Monday with a first-round Class 4A state
playoff match against Summerville. In all, eight Midlands teams are in
action in the first round. Ninth-ranked Irmo hosts Fort Dorchester, 11th
ranked Lexington has a road trip to Beaufort, 13th ranked Spring Valley
hosts Northwestern, 14th ranked Ridge View is at home against Nation Ford,
vastly improved White Knoll is at West Ashley and Blythewood makes its 4A
playoff debut at Clover.
Dutch Fork’s seniors certainly want to make amends for last season’s
relatively quick playoffs exit – a 1-0 shootout loss in the second round at
home to James Island. The Silver Foxes advanced to the Lower State finals in
2007 before being send packing by eventual state champion Wando. The Silver
Foxes boast a balanced scoring attack featuring Stephanie Gauthier, Sarah
Haacker and Sam Vickers. Sophomore Katie Nesbit has done a fine job in goal
after senior keeper Katie Wallace suffered an early-season injury.

Camden claims first region
soccer title in 14 years
Camden completed an unbeaten run to
the Region 6-3A girls soccer championship on Thursday, downing Lakewood 8-0
at Zemp Stadium. It was the first region title for the program since 1995.
The Bulldogs (8-4 overall) finished 6-0 in region matches, out-scoring the
opposition 53-2.
The Bulldogs wasted little time in taking the lead in the region finale as
Robinson scored less than 90 seconds into the contest and was followed by a
goal from the foot of senior Ashley Morgan less than four minutes later.
Offensively, Camden has been led by forwards Indian Robinson and Tina Stokes
and midfielders Josey Dean, Kaney Steele, and Loren Grimm. Robinson has been
the big gun with 28 goals and 19 assists, while Stokes has 20 goals and nine
assists on the books. The Camden defense has been a bright spot, according
to Bulldogs coach Stephen Sutusky. Carrie Stokes and Jessie Baldwin have
been the leaders of a unit that also includes Shaniqua Dowdell, Brittany
Bradley, and Liz Wilson. Jessica Ekman and Lauren Geddings have shared duty
in goal. The two have combined for six shutouts this season.
