Carbondale surprises Lakeland
CARBONDALE — For the first 25 to 30 minutes Tuesday, Lakeland showed why it is favored to win a sixth straight Lackawanna Soccer League Northern Division title.

The Chiefs kept Carbondale on its heels at the Andrew J. Cerra Sports Complex with persistent pressure.

Chargerettes coach Al Dyno hoped his team would weather the early storm, that it could stay close while conserving its energy for the second half.

The Chargerettes made their coach look good, scoring twice after halftime to beat Lakeland, 2-1, in the opener for each.

“We just wanted it more,’’ said Carbondale midfielder Brittanie Hess, who controlled the middle in the second half. “Our team just needed to do what it’s capable of doing.’more

Villa Maria kicks it into high gear again

Villa Maria's motto is: "Play well, and good things will happen."

It's also a way to describe the Hurricanes' start to the soccer season.

Villa Maria defeated St. Basil, 6-1, in yesterday's Athletic Association of Catholic Academies opener in Malvern.

As a result, the Hurricanes (2-0, 1-0 league) have outscored their first two opponents by a combined 9-1.

"I didn't think that we were expected to start like that," Villa Maria junior striker Molly Nawalinski said, "but we are excited to start like this." more

Dilal Named Brine / NEC Defensive Player of the Week

Moon Township, Pa.—Senior Caitlin Dilal (Rochester, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy), a member of the Robert Morris University women’s soccer team, was named the Brine / Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The senior goalkeeper recorded shutouts in her first two starts as a Colonial, helping the women’s team to a 2-0 start for just the second time in team history.

The netminder has stopped all 15 shots she faced this season, including eight saves in a 2-0 season-opening victory against Youngstown State last Thursday.  Dilal followed that with a seven-save performance in a narrow 1-0 win over Howard Sunday afternoon.  After playing just twenty eight minutes in goal the past two seasons, Dilal has now played 208:23 without allowing a goal, and currently leads the league with two shutouts.

Wildcats Earn No. 27 National Ranking from Soccer Buzz Magazine
Villanova also is receiving votes in NSCAA/adidas coaches' poll

Sept. 2, 2008

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Two weeks into the 2008 season the Villanova women's soccer team is not only 3-0 but has outscored its opposition by a 12-1 margin in three games. As a result, the Wildcats have moved into the national top-30 in this week's Soccer Buzz Magazine national rankings, coming in at No. 27. Villanova is also receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas Coaches' Top 25 poll. The Wildcats have now earned a national ranking at some point during the season in seven of the last eight seasons.

A relatively young Wildcat team is already making headlines in the early part of the year. After a record-setting 7-0 win over UMBC in its season opener, Villanova traveled to Vermont and emerged as champions of the TD Banknorth Classic. The Wildcats defeated New Hampshire 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament and then used a late offensive surge to knock off the host Catamounts in the final game.

Dervarics Earns Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Honors

On Friday night in College Park, the Bison women trailed Maryland 1-0 into the second half, when Dervarics scored in the 55th and 68th minutes to give her team the lead for good. Chelsea McGorry added an insurance goal, and Bucknell held on for a 3-2 victory against a Terrapins side that came in listed second among "others receiving votes" in the national top-25 poll.

Dervarics' two-goal night gave her four tallies in the team's first three goals of the season. She was kept off the board in Bucknell's 4-1 setback at Rutgers on Sunday, but Dervarics still leads the Patriot League in both goals and points. She now has 28 career goals, tying her for fifth on Bucknell's all-time list, and she is now alone in fifth place on the career points list with 69.

For Dervarics, the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and the preseason choice to repeat that honor in 2008, multi-goal games are not unexpected.

Girls soccer players can get there from here, too

You can get there from here.

I believe I’ve applied that road sign to the Olympic Games, the World Series, the Super Bowl, the first round of the NFL Draft, the National Hockey League, the heights of NCAA Division I volleyball and the NCAA basketball championship tournament in previous columns.

Lauryn Williams, Terry Francona, Ty Law, Darrelle Revis, Nate Guenin, Christa Harmotto and Sean Miller have shown us the way in recent years.

We must now added NCAA women’s soccer to our list.

Alyssa Cosnek, a true freshman from Hopewell, scored two goals on her 19th birthday as the University of Iowa opened its season with a 4-0 victory over Drake. She scored her first collegiate goal in the ninth minute of the game, and scored again 11 minutes later.

Hawks Fall to #17 California, 6-0

Aug. 31, 2008

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team fell to #17 California, 6-0 at Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Junior Sarah O'Malley and freshman Kortney Rhoades were named to the 14th Cal Invitational All-Tournament Team.

SJU (0-2) attempted to contain Cal's athletic advantage by playing a defensive formation. The maneuver did the trick for a while as the Golden Bears misconnected on many passes. They created just one scoring opportunity early in which Megan Bastianelli (three saves) made a sprawling stop to keep the Bears off the board in the fourth minute.

Nevertheless, Cal (2-1) finally broke through in the 20th minute with a gorgeous header by Katrin Omarsdottir off a Nkechi Kanu cross. Cal struck again just four minutes later with a goal by All-American Alex Morgan. more

The Huskies out shot the Red Flash 8-1 in the first half, but were held scoreless by the solid play of goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon). Boyer had four saves in the first half, and nine total saves for the game.

“They were definitely the better team in the first half,” said head coach Brenda van Stralen. “We came out flat. But we were the better team in the second half.” more

Bucknell Women's Soccer Falls to Rutgers, 4-1

Aug. 31, 2008

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Senior Nicole Marotta (Bridgewater, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) scored early for the Bucknell women's soccer team, but Rutgers (3-0) proved to be too much, earning a 4-1 decision over the Bison on Sunday evening at Yurcak Field. The loss was Bucknell's first of the season, putting its record at 2-1-1.

Bucknell struck first when Marotta scored in the 17th minute off the Bison's only corner kick of the game. The goal, which was Marotta's second of the short season, was assisted by freshman Casey Crowley (Hamilton Square, N.J./The Peddie School). The assist was Crowley's first of her collegiate career.

Bucknell was unable to maintain its early momentum, however, getting out-shot by Rutgers, 19-9. The Bison allowed four consecutive goals, three of them coming in the first half. Rutgers' Caycie Gusman scored twice, while Gina Demaio assisted on all three of the team's first-half goals. more

Bullets Force 1-1 Tie with Rochester

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The University of Rochester more than quadrupled Gettysburg College’s shot total in the teams’ non-conference women’s soccer match on Sunday, but all the extra attempts went for naught as the Bullets first attempt was their best and led to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with the perennial national playoff contender.

Rochester (0-1-1), a regular participant in the NCAA Division III Tournament for many years, fired off 32 attempts at the Gettysburg (1-0-1) goal with most of those attempts sailing wide of the mark. Despite the offensive advantage by the Yellowjackets, the Bullets struck early on their first offensive possession following a corner kick in the second minute. Freshman Lauren Johnson (Morristown, N.J./Morristown-Beard) took the corner and sent a line drive to the near post to fellow first-year Sara Montague (Newark, Del./St. Mark's). Montague touched the ball with her head back to the front of the goal where sophomore Sarah Yeager’s (Westport, Conn./Staples)

Barker Bangs in Game Winner in 2-1 Victory

Aug. 31, 2008

STATEN ISLAND, NY - With 1:58 left in regulation time, Lauren Barker took a pass from Sara Copare and found the back of the net for the game-winning goal as La Salle Women's Soccer defeated Wagner, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Wagner (0-1) had just knotted the game in the 80th minute and it looked like the contest would go into overtime until Barker's heroics.

The old saying, "the third time is the charm" was appropriate here, as Barker had taken two other shots earlier in the game - both near misses. Both were headers off corner kicks, the first hit off the crossbar in the eighth minute and the second - in the 84th minute - was saved by Seahawk goalie Leslie Reed. more

The ninth-ranked Lions are 2-1 on the year, while Hofstra falls to 1-2 on the season. Sophomore Danielle Toney (Northville, Mich.) also scored a goal for the victorious Lions.

"Today was a better team effort. It was much more fun on this side of the score then on Friday," said head coach Erica Walsh. "I'm excited about the combination of Schoep and Dani. Add Nikki along with that tandem and we'll have a lethal front this fall. With Jackie Hakes and Emma Thompson both coming out of the back like we had today, we had much more variety in our attack that way and we'll be much more dangerous."  more

Owls Drop 3-1Decision to Fairfield

Aug. 31, 2008

HAMILTON, N.Y.- Amanda Vogelman continued her stellar play, scoring a early goal for the Temple women‘s soccer team, but it was not enough as the Owls (0-2) dropped a 3-1 decision to Fairfield (2-1) on Sunday afternoon in their Puma Invitational finale.

Vogelman, who was a strong offensive presence in the Owls’ tough loss to Marist on Friday, got Temple on the board early with an unassisted goal at the 14:24 mark. TU’s lead would be short-lived, however, as Fairfield’s Adrienne Boyer tied the game at one with an unassisted tally just two and a half minutes later. Duquesne Match Vesus Jacksonville Ruled Tie by NCAA

Aug. 31, 2008

Due to a time keeping error in the Friday August 29th match, the NCAA has ruled the Duquesne/Jacksonville contest a draw and any statistical information recorded after the 110th minute declared is now invalid.

Initially, Jacksonville won the match after a goal in the 119th minute, but NCAA rule 7.1.1 states "For regular season games, two sudden-victory overtime periods of 10 minutes each shall be played. A coin toss called by the visiting team will determine choice of ends of the field or the kickoff before the start of the first sudden-victory overtime period. Teams shall change ends of the field to start the second sudden-victory overtime period. If the score still is tied at the end of the second sudden-victory overtime period, the game will remain a tie for all purposes."

The overtime periods were clocked at 15 minutes each instead of 10 minutes. Therefore, since JU's scored in the 119th minute, the ruling is the goal is void and the match ended in the 110th minute tied at 1-1.

McKenna Leads Bullets Past Royals in OT

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Kerry McKenna (Sharon, Conn./Kent School) picked the perfect opportunity to score her first career goal at Gettysburg College as her shot in the 94th minute propelled the women’s soccer team to a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Eastern Mennonite University at Clark Field on Saturday.

Gettysburg (1-0) had a fair share of opportunities to jump on the board throughout the contest, taking a dozen more shots than the visitors (17-5), but Eastern Mennonite (0-2) goalkeeper Abi Diffenbach stopped eight would-be goals in regulation. The Royals nearly ended the match in the final minute as all-conference forward Katie Lamm, who scored the team’s first goal of the season against No. 2 Messiah on Friday, corralled the ball on the Bullets’

Taking charge

EVESHAM — For a couple of years, it's been clear that the Cherokee girls soccer team, with just a tweak or two, could be a force in South Jersey. Cherokee fans are hoping Andy Clapperton, who became the head coach after 19 years as Jim Hanna's assistant, is the guy to apply the fine tuning.

Clapperton, a Moorestown High School graduate who attended Temple University, said yesterday his approach will be to emphasize pace and tactics, in addition to conditioning, which was Hanna's strong suit. If he can keep the Chiefs on an even keel throughout the season, he hopes to avoid the peaks and valleys of previous teams.

“We started last week and we told them, the soccer ball is almost secondary right now,” Clapperton said. “What we really want to focus on is the pace of practice. We just feel like if we have a quicker, more intense practice, then that's going to carry over to the games, because we feel that's what's been lacking; there's talent out here, but we haven't always worked as hard as we could.”  more

Sun-Gazette girls athlete of the year: Tesa McKibben, Montoursville

Tesa McKibben's accomplishments are pretty impressive: a school record in one sport, 1,000 career points in a second, and three state medals in a third.

Pretty impressive, yes, but here's the scary thing: She has one more year left. McKibben performed at a high level in three different sports during her junior year. For her efforts, she was named the Sun Gazette's Female Athlete of the Year for the 2007-08 season.

"I'm shell-shocked," McKibben, said. "I didn't think I would do well. I practiced and had a lot of help from coaches on the field and on the court. It helped a lot." more
