Wolves bounce Tigers
Edmond Santa Fe star nets hat trick as BA's season ends.

BROKEN ARROW — Edmond Santa Fe's Caitlin Mooney took a sabbatical from high school soccer last season.

Mark Broken Arrow as one of many schools perhaps wishing she took off her senior year, also.

Mooney scored three goals to vault the Wolves to a 4-1 victory over host Broken Arrow in the Class 6A semifinals on Tuesday night.

Edmond Santa Fe (12-4) will meet Jenks for the state championship on Saturday at Mustang High School. The Trojans defeated Edmond Memorial 3-0 in another semifinal.

"These girls have been on a mission for the last three weeks," Wolves coach Larry Truesdell said.

Edmond Santa Fe has won 11 straight matches, and only allowed two goals during that span.

Truesdell admitted it was a comfortable feeling when his team blasted to a three-goal lead at halftime.

Mooney, who was announced as the Gatorade Oklahoma Girls Soccer Player of the Year earlier Tuesday, didn't take long to get Santa Fe rolling, scoring less than four minutes into the contest.

Jasmine Simmons scored in the 28th minute, and Mooney added her second score five minutes later to make it 3-0.

"It's disappointing to give up a goal that early in the game," Broken Arrow coach Justin Elkington said. "(Mooney) is a difference maker and a quality player."

Mooney didn't play last year to concentrate on club soccer and playing for the U.S. National team. She decided to return to the Wolves at the urging of Maryland coach Brian Pensky, who signed her to a letter of intent.

The Tigers (8-3) got on the board when Ashley McMahon scored on a ricochet in the 47th minute, but Mooney completed her hat trick by beating BA keeper Katie Matuska one-on-one in the 74th minute.

Truesdell was impressed with his senior class, which has won 21 straight district games and is shooting for the school's first state championship.

"We are coming together at the right time," he said.
