Venemans goal lifts Caledonia  past Catholic Central

CALEDONIA -- Caledonia senior Heather Veneman called it a "lucky shot."

Veneman's perfectly placed shot sailed beyond the goalkeeper and dropped into the left corner of the net, giving the Fighting Scots a 1-0 win against fellow O-K Gold Conference front-runner Catholic Central.

Both teams entered Friday night with unbeaten records in conference play.

Caledonia improved to 7-0 (10-0-1 overall), while the Cougars slipped to 5-1 (5-2-1).

"This was a really big win and we needed to play tough," Veneman said. "We needed to come out strong in the second half to beat them, and my team just pushed through."

After a scoreless first half, Veneman's goal came less than two minutes into the second half.

Caledonia sophomore Hailey Yondo delivered the pass to Veneman for the game winner past Catholic Central goalie Kailey Naumcheff.

"Hailey drew out the defenders and opened up the pass for my shot," Veneman said. "I had an awkward angle and my hips weren't really faced, so it was more like a loft. It had a lot of spin on it, so I was surprised when it went in. It was a lucky shot."

Caledonia's defense was superb, limiting the Cougars to two shots on goal.

The Fighting Scots also bottled up Catholic Central sophomore standout Alex Heffron, who was surrounded every time she touched the ball.

"It was a great effort defensively against Heffron, and the whole defense played well," Caledonia coach Steve Sanxter said. "We didn't capitalize on our opportunities early in the first half, but their keeper played well. I thought we recovered well."

Catholic Central coach Genevieve Sandner, whose team lost 6-1 to Caledonia last season, said her team was hesitant to pull the trigger offensively.

"They were strong defensively on the backline, but we just didn't get our shots off today," Sandner said. "We talked at halftime about how we had to test the keeper. I think if we had one downfall, it was we didn't turn and take the shot for opportunities."

Caledonia, which has only two seniors, displayed the effort Sanxter has come to expect this season, he said.

"It wasn't always pretty tonight, but I thought our intensity was always there," Sanxter said. "I think that's the one thing I have confidence in. We're not always on our game, but the effort is always on."
